- Keeping Children Safe in Education - Guidance to all schools and colleges has been updated from 3rd September 2018. Please find more information here. In summary, the updated guidance includes a new section (Part 5) on child on child sexual violence and sexual harassment, guidance on the management of safeguarding in a school and information on the criminal exploitation of children, homelessness, domestic abuse, child sexual exploitation and children missing education. The NSPCC has published a briefing for schools and colleges here.
- LGfL (London Grid for Learning) has commissioned translations of KCSIE Part 1 into ten key community languages. These are now available below as open-access documents for the benefit of all schools at kcsietranslate.lgfl.net to help schools meet the requirement for all staff to read and understand the document. The languages are Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, Gujarati, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Spanish and Urdu.

Disqualification by Association
Details of the changes to the childcare disqualification arrangements made by the 2018 Regulations are provided in Annex A of this draft guidance. An explanation of how Ofsted will consider waiver applications up to 31 August is set out in Annex B.
Under the 2018 Regulations, schools are no longer required to establish whether a member of staff providing, or employed to work in, childcare is disqualified by association. Regulation 9 does not apply to staff in a relevant school setting; disqualification by association is only relevant where childcare is provided in domestic settings (e.g. where childminding is provided in the home) or under registration on domestic premises. Accordingly, schools should not ask their staff questions about cautions or convictions of someone living or working in their household. Schools should
- review their staffing policies and safer recruitment procedures, and make changes accordingly. It is important that schools follow the safer recruitment procedures set out in Part three of KCSIE. Schools and local authorities should also review their safeguarding policies, to ensure that they fully comply with KCSIE, and ensure that their policies are clear about the expectations they place on staff, including where their relationships and associations both within and outside of the workplace.
Safeguarding Self-Assessments and Section 11 Audits
The LSCB strongly encourages all agencies that work with children and young people to ensure their arrangements reflect the importance of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
Working Together to Safeguard Children requires LSCBs to gather data to assess whether partners are meeting their statutory obligations.
In Richmond and Kingston, Schools’ compliance with Section 11 is monitored annually and we would ask school’s Designated Safeguarding Leads to complete a Safeguarding Audit/self-assessment with their Designated Safeguarding Governor. On completion, this should be submitted to Lucy Macarthur at email@example.com
You will then be contacted at a later date in order for us to complete a short monitoring meeting with you, in order to ensure you are addressing the areas of development on your action plan.
